Overview
Not a bare-bones starter walkie talkie, the Baofeng handheld transmits on three ham bands and listens to aviation, NOAA weather and FM broadcast. It programs from a phone over Bluetooth or from a PC with CHIRP.
Bluetooth programming plus CHIRP support covers both beginners and operators managing large channel lists. The bundled speaker mic and high-gain antenna add value out of the box, but the radio is not water resistant.
Who it's for
Hobby operators, scanner listeners and campers get wide reception and easy setup. Anyone heading into wet weather should add protection or choose a sealed radio.
Pros and cons
- Three transmit bands
- Broad receive coverage incl. aviation
- Phone and PC programming
- Speaker mic and headset included
- Not water resistant
- Small battery for heavy use
- Licensing guidance not covered
Performance notes
Range depends on the antenna fitted and the terrain, and the long high-gain antenna in the box reaches farther than the standard one. Frequency copy reads a nearby radio's transmission, so teammates match channels without menus.
