Surround Sound Systems

Surround sound systems come as speaker packages that need separate amplification, powered packages with amplification built in, and soundbar packages with companion speakers. Separate speakers give you more freedom to position individual channels, while a soundbar groups the front channels beneath the television. Start by deciding whether you need speakers for equipment you already own or a package that can power its supplied speakers. An AV receiver bought separately provides amplification and source switching, but does not necessarily include speakers.

That amplification decision determines which components must work together and how to read the advertised power. Among the 32 products that list power, most fall between 62 and 1,400 watts, and 365 watts is typical. For passive speakers, compare their impedance and recommended amplifier power with your receiver’s specifications; a speaker’s power handling is not its electrical consumption or its output. For a powered package, establish whether the quoted wattage is continuous or peak power, and whether it covers the entire system or an individual channel. Power measurements depend on speaker impedance, distortion limits and how many channels are driven, so compare ratings under equivalent conditions. A larger wattage claim by itself cannot tell you how loud or clear the system will sound at your seat.

Next, decide whether your room can accommodate speakers beside or behind the seating area. Discrete surround speakers place effects around listeners, while virtual surround relies on processing whose effect can vary with seating position and room layout. Compare the proposed speaker positions with the layout guidance in the manual before committing to a package. For dialogue, look for a dedicated center channel with independent level adjustment if you want to raise speech relative to effects. For bass, a separate subwoofer creates another placement requirement; independent bass adjustment matters when strong movie effects would overwhelm conversation or disturb adjoining rooms.

Before buying, match the system’s audio inputs to your television’s outputs and confirm that it accepts the surround formats your television or player can send. The connectivity filter’s Bluetooth and Wired labels do not identify every connection: establish how the television, surround speakers and subwoofer each connect, including which units need power outlets. Measure the center speaker or soundbar against the space below the screen so it will not obstruct the picture or remote sensor. Finally, establish whether the necessary speaker cables, audio cables, mounting brackets and any required wireless receiver modules are supplied or sold separately.
