A pocketable external drive for backing up photos, videos and documents from a PC or adding game console storage. It is a mechanical drive, and the listing's transfer speed figures do not agree, so real speed is unclear.

Overview
On a travel desk or in a laptop bag, the yellow My Passport adds large portable storage to a PC over a USB cable. A mechanical hard disk inside a plastic shell holds the files, and WD Backup software with password protection guards them.
Large capacity in a palm-sized shell makes it a simple way to back up a laptop or carry a media library between machines. Its listing quotes transfer figures that do not line up, so judge it by capacity rather than speed.
Who it's for
Students and home office workers with a laptop full of photos get a large backup target with software and password locking. Editors working straight off the drive, or anyone who drops gear often, should consider an SSD instead.
Pros and cons
- Large capacity for photo and video backups
- Password protection for stored files
- WD Backup software for automatic copies
- Works with Xbox One and PlayStation 4
- Mechanical disk, not flash storage
- Transfer speed figures in listing conflict
- Plastic enclosure, rugged rating not listed
- Only PC named as a compatible computer
Performance notes
Transfer speed is governed by the spinning disk inside and the USB link, and large single files copy more smoothly than thousands of small ones. Because the disk has moving parts, it should stay still while it is reading or writing.
