Overview
Backing up a Windows PC on a schedule is the main job here, using the WD Backup software that ships with the drive. The portable hard drive plugs in over USB and locks files behind a password with hardware encryption.
Automatic backups plus password locking cover the two things most people forget to set up on their own. It arrives formatted for Windows, so a Mac needs a reformat, and the warranty length is listed inconsistently.
Who it's for
Windows users and PlayStation owners who need more room will find it simple to set up. Mac owners are better served by the Mac edition, which skips the reformat step.
Pros and cons
- Backup software included
- Password lock with hardware encryption
- Listed for PlayStation consoles
- Cable and quick guide included
- Reformat needed for Mac
- Warranty length listed inconsistently
- Spinning disk, slower than an SSD
Performance notes
Throughput is limited by the spinning disk speed, so large file copies run at hard drive pace on a fast port. Backup jobs run in the background through the WD software once a schedule is set. Encryption happens on the drive hardware, so the computer carries no extra load.
