Overview
Not a flash drive, the WD My Passport is a slim portable hard disk sized for large photo, video and document backups. Bundled backup software, hardware encryption and password protection guard the files.
Large capacity in a pocketable case, plus encryption and ransomware-aware backup software, make it a practical everyday backup drive. As a spinning drive its transfers are modest, and the included cable is USB-A only.
Who it's for
Suited to students, families and travelers backing up photos and documents. Editors working directly off the drive will want flash storage.
Pros and cons
- Large capacity in a slim case
- Hardware encryption with password
- Ransomware-aware backup software
- Works on older USB 2.0 ports
- Spinning drive, modest speed
- USB-A cable only
- Write speed not listed
Performance notes
Transfer speed is set by the mechanical drive rather than the USB link, so large backups take time. Hardware encryption happens on the drive itself once a password is set.
