Garlic Supplements

Garlic supplements come as dried garlic powder, garlic oil and extracts, including aged garlic extract, commonly supplied in tablets, capsules or softgels. Garlic powder, oil and aged extracts are not interchangeable preparations, so start by identifying the preparation on the label and matching any clinician recommendation to that form.

Read the ingredient panel before comparing the amount advertised on the front of the bottle. An amount of garlic powder, an amount of extract and a stated equivalent amount of raw garlic are different descriptions, not interchangeable measures of strength. An allicin-yield claim describes potential release under specified conditions, not necessarily the allicin already present in the supplement. To compare declared compound amounts, look for the same named compound and its content per serving; a yield claim alone cannot make that comparison. Item weight is a separate measurement. Among the 6 products that list item weight, most fall between 0.1 and 0.5 pounds, and 0.3 pounds is typical. It cannot tell you the amount of a garlic compound per serving or how long a bottle will last. To estimate bottle duration, use the tablet or capsule count together with the label’s daily serving directions; a larger pack may require more units each day.

Choose a dosage form you can comfortably swallow, using the listed tablet or capsule dimensions where available. If you need to open capsules or crush tablets, establish whether the manufacturer permits this before buying, because some coatings are intended to control where the contents are released. For dietary restrictions, look at the capsule shell and other ingredients as well as the garlic preparation; a softgel shell may contain gelatin.
