Overview
WD pairs this portable hard drive with optional password-activated hardware encryption and WD Backup software for automatic local and cloud backups. It connects over USB and carries a longer warranty than basic drives.
Hardware encryption guards private files if the drive is lost. Scheduled backups run without remembering to copy. Out of the box it is formatted for Windows, so Mac users must reformat before use.
Who it's for
Freelancers, students and professionals carrying private documents benefit from the encryption and backup tools. Anyone who wants flash speed or plug-in use on a Mac should look elsewhere.
Pros and cons
- Hardware encryption with password
- Automatic backup software
- Three year warranty
- Light portable body
- Mac requires reformatting
- Spinning disk is slower than flash
- Encryption needs software setup
Performance notes
Encryption runs in hardware once a password is set, so it does not slow the computer. Transfer speed depends on the spinning disk, steady for large files and slower for many small ones. Backups depend on the WD Backup software running on the computer.
