Overview
Western Digital pairs this orange My Passport with WD Backup software so a Windows PC copies files to it automatically. The portable hard drive connects by USB cable and protects data with a password and hardware encryption.
A bright shell that stands out in a bag, plus listed support for both Xbox and PlayStation consoles, gives it broad use around the house. Rotation speed is missing from the listing, and Mac owners must reformat before use.
Who it's for
Console players short on space and Windows users wanting scheduled backups both get use from it. Anyone editing large video projects straight off the drive should consider an SSD instead.
Pros and cons
- Bright orange shell easy to find
- Xbox and PlayStation listed as compatible
- Automatic backup software included
- Hardware encryption with password lock
- Rotation speed not listed
- Requires reformat for Mac
- Warranty length stated two ways
Performance notes
Speed depends on the internal hard disk more than the USB link, so expect hard drive pace on large copies. The plastic case and spinning platters make it more sensitive to drops than flash storage, so carry it switched off. Password locking is handled by the drive hardware.
