Overview
Western Digital packs a large capacity spinning disk into this slim My Passport drive, powered over USB. Included software schedules backups, and built in encryption locks the files behind a password.
Huge capacity in a small, bus powered drive makes it good for backups and game libraries. As a mechanical drive it transfers slower than an SSD and should be handled gently when running.
Who it's for
Photo archives, PC backups and console game storage suit this drive. Editors working directly off the drive will want an SSD.
Pros and cons
- Very high capacity for its size
- Hardware encryption with password
- Backup software included
- Works with Xbox and PlayStation
- Slower than portable SSDs
- Mechanical parts sensitive to drops
- USB-C cable not mentioned
Performance notes
The spinning disk reads sequential files at a steady pace, which suits backups and media, but random access is slower than flash. Hardware encryption runs on the drive, so it does not slow the computer. Keep it still while writing to protect the heads.
