Overview
Not a drive loaded with backup software, the WD Elements Portable is a simple external hard disk that plugs in over USB and stores files, photos and game libraries. It arrives formatted for Windows.
Large capacity in a basic package suits Windows backups and game storage. Mac and other systems need reformatting, and the listing does not name any included cable.
Who it's for
PC users backing up files and console players expanding storage get a lot of room. Mac owners who want Time Machine ready out of the box should choose a Mac-formatted model.
Pros and cons
- Works on USB 3.0 and 2.0
- Ready for Windows
- Console compatibility listed
- Two year warranty
- Mac requires reformatting
- No backup software mentioned
- Cable not listed in box
Performance notes
Transfer speed is limited by the spinning disk inside rather than the USB connection. Older USB ports slow it further. Reformatting for another system erases everything on it.
