Overview
Ultrabook and slim notebook owners get a thin portable drive with SmartWare Pro automatic backup, which copies every changed file to the drive or to Dropbox. WD Security adds a password with hardware encryption.
Continuous background backup removes the need to remember to copy files, and Dropbox adds an off-site copy. WD Drive Utilities handle diagnostics and a sleep timer. As an older model with modest capacity, it suits documents and photos more than big video libraries.
Who it's for
Students and professionals carrying an ultrabook get thin storage that backs up on its own. Anyone storing large video libraries will outgrow the capacity.
Pros and cons
- Thin profile for slim laptops
- Continuous automatic backup
- Dropbox cloud backup option
- Password and hardware encryption
- Older model generation
- Speed varies with host hardware
Performance notes
Backup runs quietly in the background, copying files as soon as they change, using few system resources. On the newer, faster USB ports transfers run much quicker than on older ones. Real speed depends on the computer hardware and setup.
