Overview
Home offices and coffee shop work sessions suit this silver WD drive, a metal-cased portable hard disk with password protection and automatic backups to the drive and Dropbox. It plugs in over USB.
The aluminum shell looks at home beside a laptop and protects the drive inside. Password-locked encryption and cloud backup cover theft and loss. Mac users must reformat it before use.
Who it's for
Professionals and students carrying private photos and work files get encryption plus backup tools. People who need fast flash storage or zero setup on a Mac should look elsewhere.
Pros and cons
- Password and hardware encryption
- Automatic local and cloud backup
- Three year warranty
- USB cable included
- Mac requires reformatting
- Spinning disk, not SSD speed
- Rotational speed not listed
Performance notes
Security runs in hardware once a password is set, so file access stays transparent after unlocking. Transfer speed depends on the internal hard disk more than the USB link. Backups run through WD software to the drive and Dropbox.
