Products on this page include solid hardwood, engineered hardwood and wood look peel and stick planks, which are very different floors under one name. Solid hardwood is one piece of timber that can be sanded and refinished many times, engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a stable core, and peel and stick or click planks are thin products aimed at quick makeovers. The first decision is how permanent the floor is, because the installation method and the subfloor decide what you can use.
Thickness and the wear layer are the next questions. Among the 10 products that list item thickness, most fall between 0.1 and 0.9 inches, and 0.8 inches is typical. Thicker solid boards can be refinished more times, while on engineered floors the thickness of the real wood top layer decides how many times it can be sanded. Thin peel and stick planks suit rentals and low traffic rooms, but they show every bump in the subfloor and can lift at edges.
Room and climate matter for wood. Solid hardwood can move with humidity and is usually avoided in basements and bathrooms, while engineered boards cope better with changes in humidity and can often float over underlay. Check whether boards are nailed, glued or clicked together and whether underfloor heating is allowed.
Before buying, check the coverage per box, the finish, whether the boards are prefinished, and the installation method. Order extra for cutting waste and future repairs, and let boards acclimatise in the room for the time the maker recommends before installing. Transitions, skirting and stair nosing are often sold separately and should match the floor in colour and thickness, so check whether the brand offers them before you commit. Keep a box of spare boards for future repairs, since a later batch can differ in shade.
How we list products: every listing here has a recorded price, a minimum customer rating and enough ratings or monthly sales. Generic and unbranded listings are left out; every real brand stays, including brands sold only on Amazon. Products are ordered by the same ProductDome score on every page.Editorial policy
