Liquid motion lamps, often called lava lamps, heat coloured wax in a sealed glass vessel so blobs rise and fall slowly, and they are decorative mood lights rather than task lighting. The first decision is the size and where it will sit, because a large lamp needs a stable spot away from small children and pets.

The bulb provides the heat that moves the wax, so these lamps take a while to start flowing and get warm to the touch. Use only the bulb type and wattage the maker specifies, since a stronger bulb can overheat the wax.

Placement matters for the effect. Keep the lamp away from cold drafts and direct sun, which stop the wax flowing evenly, and avoid moving it while warm, which can cloud the liquid permanently.

Before buying, check the height, the bulb type and whether a spare is included, the cord switch, and the colours of wax and liquid. Switch the lamp off after several hours of use, since running it all day can overheat it. Plug the lamp into an outlet where the cord does not trail across a walkway.
