Paint sprayers come in three main technologies, and the technology decides the jobs they can handle. Airless sprayers pump paint at high pressure through a small tip and are the choice for walls, ceilings, fences and exteriors, where speed matters. High volume, low pressure sprayers use a turbine to atomise paint gently, which gives a finer finish on furniture, doors and cabinets with less overspray. Handheld electric sprayers with a small cup sit in between and suit small projects. The first decision is the size of the surface you will paint most.
Paint thickness is the next question. Airless sprayers handle unthinned latex wall paint, while many turbine and handheld sprayers need thinning or work better with stains, lacquers and thin paints. Check the maker's list of compatible coatings before buying. Among the 6 products that list maximum pressure, most fall between 26 and 3,000 psi, and 2,250 psi is typical. Higher pressure moves thicker paint and longer hoses, but it also creates more overspray, so masking and drop cloths become part of every job.
Capacity and setup come next. Small cups need frequent refilling, while airless units draw straight from the paint bucket. Hose length decides how far you can move from the pump, and reversible or interchangeable tips let you change the spray width for trim and large walls. Cleaning takes real time on every sprayer, and airless units need flushing through the pump, hose and gun after each use.
Before buying, check which coatings the sprayer is rated for, the tip sizes included, the hose length, the cup or bucket capacity, and how cleaning is done. Practise on cardboard to set the pressure and distance, mask everything you do not want painted, and wear a respirator suited to the coating. Never point an airless gun at skin, since the pressure can inject paint.
How we list products: every listing here has a recorded price, a minimum customer rating and enough ratings or monthly sales. Generic and unbranded listings are left out; every real brand stays, including brands sold only on Amazon. Products are ordered by monthly searches for their brand and model on every page.Editorial policy
