Some solar torches mimic a flame with lights and need no fuel. The first decision is whether you want a real flame or an electric look alike, because real flames need fuel, supervision and distance from anything that burns.

Fuel and burn time are the next questions. Liquid torch fuel is easy to refill but must be stored safely, while gas and gel options are cleaner to handle. Check the stated burn time per fill and the canister size. Snuffer caps put out the flame and keep rain out of the wick.

Placement decides safety. Set torches firmly in the ground or on a stable base, away from overhanging branches, umbrellas, fences and walkways. Keep children and pets away.

Before buying, check the fuel type, the height, the mounting method, whether wicks and snuffers are included, and local rules on open flames. Never refill a torch while it is hot or lit. Electric and solar alternatives with flickering lights give a similar mood with no fuel, smoke or flame, which suits balconies, homes with young children and places where open flames are not allowed. Citronella fuel is often sold for insect control, but the effect on insects is limited to the area close to the flame, so a torch is mainly a source of light and atmosphere.
